What's all this?
- Stuff Near CMU is a free Wiki for the CMU community to aid in locating nearby places to eat, things to do, places to go, etc. It was started because I was tired of not knowing where to find nearby places to get lunch that were still open at 2:30PM.
What about Student Guide to Pittsburgh?
- Student Guide to Pittsburgh is a fine resource, but, for the most part, it only lists things rather than describing them. Only businesses or organizations who advertize in SGtP can have a description listed on the website, and those are usually only brief marketing blurbs. The website is also very static, since it reflects only the information in the annual hardcopy of the Guide, printed every August.
- As a Wiki, Stuff Near CMU allows everyone in the campus community to contribute information about their favorite things to do and places to hang out, eat, catch a movie, do laundry, etc. As a collection of living documents, we aim to have the most current information about Stuff Near CMU, even if it's a coffeehouse that opened just last week.
Where do I start?
- Everything is broken down into Types of Stuff, and Stuff in particular Locations.
How can I help?
- Go here to create an account, find something we don't have an article about, and start writing!
- Okay, actually the first thing you should do is to figure out what category something belongs in. Navigate to that category and check out some of the other articles there. A lot of the articles use templates to make a pretty little infobox on the side of the page, containing all of the core information about an entry.
- Try to put your article in as many relevant categories as you can, but don't overdo it. Again, see existing articles for examples. If you don't see a category that you think should exist, simply add your page to the category, and it will be magically created. Then, from your newly-written article, you can click on the category link and write a brief description of the category.
Huh? What? How does all this work?
