Not close to CMU, but not horribly far, maybe fifteen minutes from campus, depending on traffic. Mostly a giant set of strip malls. Some national chain stores, some regional chains, some local places.

The best way to get there from CMU is to go across the Highland Park Bridge. Then either get off the first exit (Aspinwall) and take Freeport Road until you reach the Waterworks, or take Route 28 North (the last exit off the bridge, to the right) to the Waterworks exit (two exits once you're on 28 proper).

Among it's highlights: a very large and 24 hours Giant Eagle, a branch of Uncle Sam's that offers beer, and a mid-level multi-screen movie theater.
